Dog shampoo safe for cat?

My cat had fleas and I sent my roommate out to get some shampoo. (we also gave him a cap star from the vet and administered frontline.) We wanted to wash all the dead fleas and eggs off. After his bath, I looked at the label more carefully and it says ';do not use on cats'; in small red letters on the back. He seems fine - has dried himself off and licked his fur for a couple of hours after. I'll call the vet tomorrow unless anyone here thinks I should call sooner. We used Sentrypro Flea and Tick Shampoo for Dogs and Puppies.Dog shampoo safe for cat?
I don't see why it would hurt. If you can use it on puppies it shouldn't be that big of a deal. Just watch for excessive scratching. Good LuckDog shampoo safe for cat?
Well, the damage is done I guess, just the one application of dog shampoo shouldn't be very bad for the cat, however, I would suggest you call a 24 hour emergency Vet hospital and ask them what you should do just to be on the safe side. Probably the cat will be fine if you are sure you rinsed all of the shampoo off. Just keep an eye on your cat. I hope everything works out Ok.
If it says don't use on cats then DON'T USE ON CATS!
don't even think about it.

it can make cats very sick giving them paralysis, seizures and can be fatal if left untreated

BIG NO NO.

wonder
Dog shampoo can have tea tree oil in it which is ok on dogs, but very toxic to cats.

Check the label again and if it's got this, contact the vet.
Well, i think its okay since your cat got nothing wrong. The label said that is just for precautions, sort.

Don't worry, its cool.
There is a chemical in dog flea and tick products that is LETHAL to cats. You need to, at the VERY least, call a vet to seek further instruction.

Because cats are such detailed groomers, I would be willing to bet that your cat has ingested some of the shampoo residue.

Edit: The chemical is called permethrin and can be fatal to cats.

How long ago did the vet administer Frontline? You may have washed it off by bathing her as you have to wait a time before you can get them wet.

This cat needs to see a vet ASAP. It's totally overloaded on flea control products. They may not even be compatible with each other!!!!
you will make that cat very mean if you keep doing that
Since it said ';puppies'; too, I would worry about having to call the vet tonight.

But I would call in the morning.

You really need to make sure you get a cat shampoo for cats...the other ones could be too harsh on the cats.

Just call the vet in the morning.

Make sure you rinsed the cat really good too.

Good luck :)
You do not need to use Frontline and Capstar at the same time- that is not good for the cat. Pick one medicine and stick with it. Also, dogs and cats have very different skin types so it isn't good to use dog shampoo on cats; however, the cat should be fine- it will most likely severly dry and irritate the cat's skin.
I would be more concerned about the fact you used Capstar AND Advantage. Plus, I'm unsure if Advantage is water proof.......if not, you just washed it off.

I would definitely contact the vet ASAP and tell them everything that's written here. They'll know if you went overboard or not.
Never use dog products on cats or cat products on dogs. You could cause serious irreversible damage to your pet. Cats and dogs have different systems. You need to keep a close eye on him and call the vet in the morning and get him checked out, maybe some blood work to verify everything is ok.
Just use cat shampoo! Why do people want to use dog shampoo on their cats!?
I think you've got the message by now. People are being heavy because cat's are so commonly killed by accidentally having dog products put on them.

You shouldn't have actually bathed the cat at all however, because you've just rendered the Frontline useless. It needs 24-48 hours before it's waterproof. You've also washed off the natural oils from the skin that Frontline requires to work. Wait at least 48 hours, and reapply the Frontline. Make sure it gets on the skin of the cat, not the fur. To do this you'll probably have to put it in at least 3 different places on the back of his neck. After, you can use a flea comb to remove dead fleas and flea dirts, and your cat will also groom them off himself. Don't bath him.

Is it safe to use scented baby lotions/shampoo/baby wash?

i gave my baby her first sponge bath an used huggies sweet pea lotion, it seems kind of strong for a baby, it is for a baby!Is it safe to use scented baby lotions/shampoo/baby wash?
';Safe'; is a subjective term. Do you mean is it going to hurt their eyes? Or does it contain strong chemicals that might cause cancer??

With babies (all humans really) it's best to use the mildest soaps you can find. Organic is best. Try to avoid ones that have ';sodium laureth ulfate'; in them, and any that say ';perfume, or fragrance'; as that is so generic it could be anything.

There are lots of more natural and organic options out there, maybe try one of them.

  • Is it safe to give a cat a bath with baby shampoo!?

Yes. You dont need to bathe a cat very often since they do clean themselves, but if you like to and dont have any cat shampoo around, baby shampoo is actually a very good alternative. Is it safe to give a cat a bath with baby shampoo!?
Your welcome, and glad she looks and feels great =0) Report Abuse
Is it safe to give a cat a bath with baby shampoo!?
Yes, but keep it out of the cat's eyes. As long as you're going through all the pain of giving the cat a bath, it's summertime, why not go get cat flea shampoo instead.
It's always best to use pet shampoos on your pet. If you must use something else, use a mild dishwashing liquid. Human shampoos can dry your cat's skin out.

Washing a cat should only be done if they are very dirty. Cats tend to keep themselves very clean on their own.
It's best to use pet shamppo, even baby shampoo is really too strong for pets. In an emergency, go for it.

But for more common bathing you really do need pet shampoo.
Yes, but it might claw you to death.
Its best to use a shampoo that is specifically designed for cats as they have many natural oils in their coats that may be stripped away using human shampoo, causing skin problems. Baby shampoo will work in a pinch though...if you absolutely must bathe your cat.
the cat will be fine but you might bleed to death from bites and clawing
cats clean them selfs. Why would you want to wash your cat?
The cat will hate you, but yes.
Yes it is.But you need to know how to handle the cat when you wash it.
Sure, just don't get it in kitty's eyes. Some cats hear the running water and think it's another cat hissing. So get the tub or what you use full before bringing kitty in. Clip the claws back, and get ready for a kitty fight! MEOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWW ! RIP! SHRED ! WHY did you DO this to me!? Then kitty will look like a drowned rat. Good luck, wear a long sleeve shirt and GLOVES - Yes I mean GLOVES and get em wet. Not rubber gloves - THICK cloth ones.
Yes, but you might find baby bath easier to rinse out; dilute either with warm water in a jug before putting it on to her fur.
It will work if your cat has to have a bath Baby shampoos contain an ingredient that numbs the eyes making the suds sting less, but they strip essential oils from animals coats. Baby shampoo is just shampoo with an eye number.

    I wouldn't use cat shampoo.

    But watered down Kitten shampoo.

Because their skin is very sensitive.

Or you can go too a vet and find a rat shampoo, if there are any.

Just don't use any of it on ears and head.

Mix clover into her meals, its a natural pesticide.

    Hope this helps your rattie.

I use dog flea%26amp;tick shampoo whenever my rats have bug problems. Cat or kitten shampoo is fine.
Go to your local pet shop.

Cat flea shampoo can be too much for a rat and can harm them!
No, just go to Petco and buy rodent shampoo.

Is it healthy/safe to mix shampoo? (Selsun Blue and Garnier Fructis conditioner)?

It is healthy/safe to use Selsun Blue as a shampoo, and Garnier Fructis Conditioner? Also, is it okay to go:

One day: Selsun Blue / Garnier Fructis Conditioner

Next day: Garnier Shampoo / Garnier Conditioner

And keep on switching? Is it healthy/safe to mix shampoo? (Selsun Blue and Garnier Fructis conditioner)?
Of course it's safe to mix shampoos and conditioners.

I've found my hair is actually healthier when I mix up my shampoos and conditioners. Use one combo of shampoos/conditioners for a couple days, then switch. Is it healthy/safe to mix shampoo? (Selsun Blue and Garnier Fructis conditioner)?
It is safe to mix shampoo with another conditioner. But you hair will come out smelling 2 different things, but it's all right. You can keep on switching if you want too. It's all up to you really.
    Yes, totally safe.
Of course! I do the same thing! I mix mane 'n tail and gliss kur. Since the mane shampoo and conditioner left my hair really thick feeling and coarse I mixed it with gliss kur (shampoo=total repair, conditioner=liquid silk) which leaves my so silky but makes my already thin hair flat. The result? Thick feeling hair that looked and felt like silk! (all I did was put a doulop of each shampoo and a doulop of each conditioner and put them in!) So unless you are using a shampoo for medical reasons (it would have chemicals) it will be ok.
