Is it safe to use human shampoo on dogs?

One of my dogs is stinky and I'd like to give him a bath soon, but I can't find the dog shampoo. Is it possible (and safe) to use human shampoo on him, or should I just wait until I can go out and get some more dog shampoo? Is it safe to use human shampoo on dogs?
The only difference between human shampoo and dog shampoo is human is more expensive. ';pH balanced'; means nothing and is just a marketing thing. Who would make a shampoo for dogs or humans that is too acid or alkaline? Our groomers' group did an experiment around the country and found that the pH of water will vary greatly from place to place. Healthy dogs actually have more oily and waxy skin than humans. Also, flakey skin can result from either a dry or oily condition.

If you are using a human or pet shampoo, dilute it 1 part shampoo and 7 parts water. It will be easier to work into the dog's coat, will do just as good a job of cleaning, and it will save you money because you'll get more baths per bottle. If your dog has really oily skin you can use Dawn diswashing soap diluted to where it just makes a good lather. Dawn is used on birds and animals caught in oil spills and was recommended by a vet dermatologist at a conference I attended.

Another myth about bathing dogs is that you can bathe them too often. Every day might be too often but once a week with a good quality shampoo is okay. I have customers who bathe their dogs that often and I also do dogs that come in twice a week for medicated baths as prescribed by the vet. If you can bathe damaged skin that often, healthy skin can also tolerate that frequency. Is it safe to use human shampoo on dogs?
You can use human shampoo on your dog only if it's absolutly nessary, and only VERY rarely. It won't hurt your dog if you use humaan shampoo once, but get dog shampoo as soon as you can. Human shampoo will strip the oils from a dog's coat, so if you use human shampoo this once then you should follow up with a conditioner if you have it.
Do not use human shampoo on a dog, it will strip his skin of the natural oils and make him itchy. If you have some baby shampoo, dilute it to half strength and use that. Or gring up some oatmeal in a blender until it is a fine powder, get the dog wet, rub with the oatmeal powder and rinse well. Some dogs just like to roll around in stinky things so you should keep a bottle of dog shampoo handy in case he does this again.
I wouldn't advise using regular adult-style shampoo (Suave, Nexus, Salon brands, Paul Mitchell, etc, etc, etc) on your dog, but I would think that Baby Shampoo (Johnson %26amp; Johnson, No More Tears, etc) would be okay as they would be milder and easier on your dog's skin and coat than regular shampoo. Shampoos adults use would be too harsh on dogs.
Johnson and Johnson is pretty safe I use that on my dog sometimes.

and sometimes i just use Showergel and hes been fine so far.

I think its safe just dont get it close to his eyes or his mouth. and try not to use very chemical stuff like Head and shoulders. Baby Shampoo is good.

**** People here are so dramatic its weird baby shapoo is fine when u dont have Doggy shapoo .
On a one time basis (since your dog is stinky), you can use people shampoo. But on a regular basis, you should always use shampoo specially formulated for dogs.

People shampoo is too detergent for dog and will dry out their skin and coat.
If it's an absolute emergency: say the dog is loaded with mud and dirt, the roads are flooded, and you have no way to get dog shampoo at all -- sure.

If you could easily wait until tomorrow, buy some, then give the dog a bath -- no.
Baby shampoo is okay for dogs. Whatever you do though..don't use the shampoo 'Head And Shoulders'; ! someone I knew used that on their dog because they had a lot of dry skin. The dogs fur started to fall off in spots. Eventually it grew back but still...

Hope I Helped!

:P
You should wait. Dogs need a very mild formula or it is likely to cause an irritation or reaction. Wait until you can get something that is made especially for dogs to be safe.
I'd wait. People shampoo is formulated for, well, people. Dogs have a very different pH so you could irritate his skin. If he's got sensitive skin, it could go so far as to give him a chemical burn.
Human shampoo has always worked fine for me. If you are still concerned try some dawn dish soap, its very gentle and is recommended by many people.
Dogs have a different PH balance than we do so if you use ';people'; shampoo on your dog it will dry out their skin and cause them to itch like crazy
NO go get dog shampoo you can get it at like Walgreen's or walmart or any pet stores.
you should wait dog shampoo has special things in it for dogs skin, but if you really have to give him a bath now then you should be ok using human shampoo
definitely not
